Place & Church: Eyakem Gulilat, Art 365


Art 365 Project: 11:00AM

Guililat received one of five Art 365 awards of $12,000 to produce new artwork for the Art 365 exhibition.

As an Ethiopian immigrant to Oklahoma, Gulilat observed the abundant presence of churches in the state and grew curious about the racial, political and socioeconomic relationships within and around churches. Using aerial photography, he documents church buildings and their surrounding neighborhoods on Sunday mornings, considering what they can tell us about ourselves, our patterns, and relationships.

March 1, 10:30 am-Noon: Gallery Talk with Art 365 Artists & Curator
April 9, Noon-1 pm: Art Moves Artist Talk - About Place & Photography with Eyakem Gulilat
April 17, 6-7:30 pm: Panel - Art 365 Artists
May 8, 6-7:30 pm: Panel - Church Locations: Place, Architecture, Geography, Community
May 10, 2-4 pm: Closing Reception with Brief Artist Tours


Guest curated by Raechell Smith, Art 365 opens February 28, 2014 at [Artspace] at Untitled, 1 NE 3rd, Oklahoma City and will continue through May 10. The artwork then will be exhibited at the Hardesty Arts Center (AHHA)101 E Archer St, Tulsa May 23 through August 9, 2014.
