Momentum Artist: Julia Swearingen, Tulsa

Julia Swearingen, Tulsa
Split Infinitive
Cotton Embroidery Floss on Stretched Canvas

Q: What was the concept behind your Momentum artwork?
A: Embroidery is a loaded medium, often relegated the realm of feminine hobby or craft. I wanted to unleash it from that concept, let it be something vibrant and playful. I chose to free it also from the figurative; let it expand and mutate on its own into a psychedelic mass of movement and color.

Q: Explain the technique and/or process you used to create your Momentum work.
A: This piece is an improvisation. Each section and line is a reaction to its surroundings. The fabric itself is stretched on regular stretcher bars and I used a "split stitch", meaning on each stitch the needle is brought up through the previous one, splitting the thread.
